Craigmillar Castle stands on land bought by the Preston family in the late 14th century. The keep dates from the early 15th century, but much of the rest of the Castle was rebuilt after it was burned by the Earl of Hertford in 1544. Mary Queen of Scots was a regular visitor. Craigmillar Castle is now managed by Historic Environment Scotland. It is one of the key sites of historical interest in Edinburgh.
