The accompanying text in the volume reads:
"34. St Mary's Wynd from the foot of the Pleasance looking towards the High Street. The Wynd derived its name from a chapel & convent dedicated to the Virgin Mary which stood on the west side. On the left is the foot of the Cowgate and at this point formerly stood the Cowgate Port one of the gates in the town wall erected after the battle of Flodden. St Marys Wynd was latterly the favourite locality of old clothes shops. under the Act of 1866, the houses were nearly taken down & the Wynd widened and re named St Mary's Wynd."
