Isabella Bird was a pioneering travel writer and photographer at a time when lone female travellers faced many barriers and personal difficulties. She travelled extensively from Australia to China and the US and published many accounts of her adventures. She was the first woman to be elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and later founded a hospital in Srinagar, India.
