The lords of Tullybardine, Perthshire, were the Murray family, who acquired the Earldom of Atholl in 1629. The title Marquis of Tullibardine eventually devolved to the eldest sons of the Dukes of Atholl.
John James Hugh Henry Stewart-Murray, 7th Duke of Atholl was born on 6 August 1840. He was the son of George Augustus Frederick John Murray, 6th Duke of Atholl and his wife Anne Home-Drummond.
He was baptised on 12 November 1840 at Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland. He was given the name of John James Hugh Henry Murray.
On 1 December 1865 his name was legally changed to John James Hugh Henry Stewart-Murray by Deed Poll.
He succeeded as the 4th Earl Strange [G.B., 1786] on 16 January 1864. He succeeded as the 3rd Baron Glenlyon, of Glenlyon, co. Perth [U.K., 1821] on 16 January 1864. He succeeded as the 4th Baron Murray, of Stanley, co. Gloucester [G.B., 1786]
He died on 20 January 1917 at age 76 at Blair Castle, Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland.
He was buried on 23 January 1917.
