Description
summoned to the big promenade hall outside, where we lined up - greys on one side - Buffs on the other - & were addressed by the Duchess. She spoke to us each individually as she walked through our lines, followed by numerous Russian generals &
officials & the British Consul. After that "how do- you-do" was over, we marched back to our boxes & we did get a reception! The whole house stood as we entered & cheered & cheered. The orchestra (with the famous Prebeck conducting) struck up "God save the King", they played it three times, the last time it was played we all sang our National anthem which delighted the house. They almost brought down the house with their cheers, it was great. I shall never forget it. From what we hear, we seem to have made a tremendous impression on the Odessaites & created a great sensation here. They're easily pleased!
25th I've just returned from town & we leave tonight - letters to be collected, to be sent in to the Consulate, so I must close for the present./
