Banner, Gladstone 1873

Description

One blue silk banner carried in the 'Great Demonstration Against the Criminal Law Amendment Act'. The banner is painted on one side only. The edging is burgundy silk with cords and tassels;. At the top the word 'MUNDELLA' has been replaced with 'GLADSTONE' (gold on red) on a separate piece of fabric, surrounded by gold starburst lines, underneath reads, 'A FRIEND To His COUNTRY and LOYAL To His (gold with black shadowing) QUEEN (gold on red). The banner is decorated with garlands of roses on the left, and thistles on the right.

A.J. Mundella was M.P. for Sheffield and a supporter of Trade Union Reform. The banner was carried in the Great Demonstration Against the Criminal Law Amendment Act on Saturday August 23 1873 and reported in the Scotsman on August 25. The Act of 1871 made picketing difficult and led to the prosecution of several Trade Unionists. The word Mundella was overlaid with the word GLADSTONE probably for the 1884 reform demonstration July 1884.
