Biography
The landscape and topographical painter, engraver and lithographer J. D. Harding was born in Deptford, England in 1797. He studied under his father and Samuel Prout, the English watercolourist, before moving to Edinburgh. His friends there included David Roberts and George Cattermole whose work he engraved. The duration of his stay in Scotland is uncertain. He exhibited in London between 1811 and 1864 at various institutions including the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He became an Associate of the Old Watercolour Society in 1820 and a Member in 1821. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1856. He wrote several books on drawing, and was a leading light in the field of art education in schools. He travelled frequently on the continent and produced 24 lithographs for each of the three volumes of the Landscape Annual in 1832-4. He died in 1863 having attained a substantial artistic reputation.
