Such glorious mountains, the rugged peaks bedecked with snow & standing out sharp & clear against the brilliant deep blue of a cloudless sky - truly a wonderful picture! Nestling on the mountain sides were quaint little villages, the houses roofed with flat, grey stone "slabs" - just flung on "anyhow"! Always v. prominent, was the village church, with its narrow, high, pointed spire and everywhere were vineyards. At every little way - side station were always soldiers, - soldiers of every nationality & in every kind of dress, i.e. British in khaki - Scotch, English, Australians & Canadians, all were there; French in pale blue, dark blue & Royal blue; & of course everywhere the Italian in his grey green & the [?] & Alpinic, with felt hat and cock's feathers.

We reached Turin in the evening & after a little delay at the station - i.e. "S.W. all dressed up & nowhere to go!" (an old joke!!) - we were escorted out to this delightful little British Red X. Hospital, which is some 5 or 6 miles out of the town. We did enjoy our night's rest last night & all slept the sleep of the just! It was so peaceful, no sitting on top of each other & a rumbling, smelly train to disturb our slumbers! This is a v. beautiful spot. The Hospital was the villa belonging to the Comtesse de Cappello &
