Leith Races were held on East Sands, an area immediately to the north of the present Links which has since been built over. They were regarded as one of Scotland's most important horse race meetings, and continued in Leith from about 1660 to 1816, when the race meetings moved to Musselburgh to be run on turf. Between 1836 and 1859 the Subscription Races were run on East Sands but this was a smaller event.
This pen and wash drawing may be by Alexander Carse, who painted 'The Return from the Races', also in this volume, and 'George IV Landing at Leith', used for the cover of 'The Life and Times of Leith' as shown in volume XI.
