The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion is situated in the parish of Ratho, eight miles west of Edinburgh. It was in former times called Halton House, and is a striking example of a Scoto-French mansion or chateau of the seventeenth century. It stands in a retired situation, but it commands fine views of the Dalmahoy and Kaimes Hills, with the Pentland Range in the back-ground.
The present house consists of a tower built in the fifteenth century, with a modern portion erected by Charles Maitland, who, as a Senator of the College of Justice, took the title of Lord Hatton; and he, about 1670, environed the old tower with wings and turrets, and his son John Maitland, added to his father's ambitious structure.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection, Central Library, Edinburgh.
After a fire in 1952 Hatton House was demolished in 1955.
