2012 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of John Clerk of Eldin. John Clerk was a remarkable man, known in his day as a naval writer and tactician. It's said that elements of his 'Essay on Naval Tactics' were even adopted by Nelson as a strategy for the Battle of Trafalgar. He was also a friend to the geologist James Hutton and architect Robert Adam.
Today though, it is his etchings of Scottish scenes that are perhaps more widely known. This small exhibition focuses on some of his scenes of life in 18th century Edinburgh. Once in the item record page, click on the image to zoom into the remarkable detail of Clerk's finely executed engravings.
