Title
Cartoon, 'Mechanics of an Ancient Burgh, going to church to claim their superiority'
Description
Cartoon of 'Mechanics of an Ancient Burgh, going to church to claim their superiority'. The cartoon features members of the Canongate Trade Incorporations, with asses ears, riding on donkeys past the Canongate Tolbooth. They carry flags bearing the emblem of their Incorporation; from the back, the Barbers, Hammermen, Tailors and Bakers. The tailors are protesting that they are the oldest and most respectable and should not be behind the bakers. The bakers reply that they are the most respectable and should be in front. At the front a man carries the Stags head of the Canongate, saying that he should go first as he is the youngest.
