The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This large mansion, a residence of the Right Hon. the Earl of Wemyss, is situated in the parish and shire of Haddington, and stands on the banks of the Tyne, about one mile east of the county town. It was built by Francis Wemyss Charteris, sixth Earl of Wemyss, about the year 1760, and was afterwards enlarged from the plans of John Henderson, architect, in 1785, when the wings of the house were added. The stone employed in its construction was a red coloured sandstone; and around it are extensive parks, about 700 acres in extent. The apartments in contains are large, elegant, and numerous, and in the picture gallery were contained a large number of fine paintings by the best masters, but several of them have in recent times been removed to Gosford House, another seat of the noble proprietor.'
Amisfield was demolished in 1928.
