Dunstaffnage Castle sits on a promontory in the firth of Lorn at the mouth of Loch Etive. It is said to have been one of the earliest royal seats. Legend also states that the 'Stone of Destiny' was kept here before being removed to Scone. The castle lies in what was a spot of great strategic importance. Robert the Bruce garrisoned the castle in 1309 and it became the chief seat of the Lordship of Lorn. It was used by the English army in the 1715 and 1745 rebellions. Flora Macdonald was also kept prisoner here in 1746.
