Description
View across rocks and a body of water towards the town of Dumbarton. A ship lies at anchor in the loch, while in the distance a church steeple rises above trees and numerous houses and buildings. Three conical shaped, and one thin industrial factory chimneys rise up behind the town, spewing forth smoke. Meanwhile, a collection of ships lie in the harbour, next to an ornate stone bridge which crosses the mouth of a river.

This view shows the main structures visible in Dumbarton at this time. These include the glass and chemical works, the bridge, and the parish church in the High Street. Dumbarton has a long history and interesting history including battles with the Picts and invasions by the Vikings. Of greatest significance was the supposed birth of St. Patrick in Dumbarton during the 4th Century. During the 1800s, Dumbarton became a centre for ship building and a major trading port.
