According to legend, this bridge was originally built by a monk called Dosho during the Showa period (834- 848) and is one of the showplaces in Kyoto. In terms of the name of Togetsu-kyo, 'To' means across, 'getsu' is moon and 'kyo' is bridge in Chinese characters. As Emperor Kameyama (1249-1305) said, it is as if the moon was crossing on the bridge while he was seeing the moving moon in the clear sky.
In the postcard, someone is wearing a large straw hat, which looks like the moon.
