Grassmarket - south side, looking west from old Corn Exchange
Description
View of the south side of the Grassmarket, Edinburgh. The road is wide and the street lined with buildings including a bank and shops at ground level. The Corn Exchange has a clock tower. Part of the road is fenced off with trees behind it and a bench in front where a group of men are talking. A tall lamppost with hanging bulb and intricate ironwork stands in the midst of the road.

The Grassmarket is an open area situated below Edinburgh Castle at the west end of the Cowgate. It was, for many centuries, an important venue for commercial and social activity in the Old Town. A weekly market was held here from the 15th to the early 20th century. It was also the site of many public executions. The Grassmarket continues to be a popular area for socialising, with a large number of pubs and restaurants.
