Text accompanying the image reads,
"Edith Cavell, born 4 December 1865 at Swardeston, Norfolk; in charge of the Berendael Medial Institute, Brussels, May-August 1915; sentence by German court-martial at Brussels, 11 October 1915, for having concealed English and French soldiers, and helped them and young Belgians to escape across the frontier, was shot by order of the Military Governor, in the prison of St. Gilles, within a few hours."
