Description
went for a lovely walk along the Danube. We came home by the trenches & Danube fortifications. We made love to some Russian soldiers & quite got round them, & they took us all over the trenches - on the condition that we would keep it "dark" where we had been!
They took us all round, showed us their "funk holes" & explained everything to us. It was most interesting. The whole thing was so complete - even to their little gardens & gravel paths - very different from the hastily made "attempts" right up the line, that we saw at very close quarters during our "sojourn in the Dobrudja!" There are such a lot of troops here - soldiers everywhere.
It is a fine sight to see a body of these troops come swinging down the road, with the slow, steady
side-to-side gait peculiar to them. They nearly always sing too; one leads off, another & yet another
joins in, until all are taking part, & then the men & their song seem to merge into one moving, vibrating whole. They say, the origin of this singing dates very far back, when they sang to keep off the evil spirits lurking
