The Waverley Market designed by Robert Morham, was built in the early 1870s on the site of a much older fruit and vegetable market. The addition of a roof, with a roof garden which could be accessed from Princes Street, allowed it to be used for events such as exhibitions and fairs, and the fruit and vegetable stallholders eventually moved to Market Street. The Waverley Market was demolished in 1973. The current shopping centre on the site opened in 1984 and has since been refurbished and renamed, most recently as Waverley Mall.
