Over two million soldiers from Britain and the British Empire were wounded in the First World War which was over 35% of those called up. German prisoners of war often acted as stretcher bearers though under armed guard. It was a way of keeping the vast number of prisoners occupied and allowing the British soldiers' activity to be focused at the Front.
