Mary Rose (left) and Elizabeth Ritchie (right) are the first and second born daughters of Annie "Nannie" Rose (nee Ritchie) and husband George Scotland.

George Scotland was the manager of a coffee plantation in Coorg/Nilgiri Hills in South India. After Nannie and George's marriage, the couple moved to India, where their three daughters were born: Mary Rose (b. 1929), Elizabeth Ritchie (b. 1931) and Anne, who was born just before the outbreak of WWII.

After India gained its independence, the family returned to the UK.
