Mrs Maurice Hewlett was the first woman in Britain to have a pilot's licence which she gained at Brooklands on 29 August 1911, flying in a Hewlett and Blondeau built Farman aircraft. With Blondeau she went on to win first prize in the Brighton Race. Starting at a factory in Clapham, London which later moved to Luton, the couple gained a reputation for the production of reliable, efficient aircraft.
