Title
The Pilot
Description
"Whatever the criticisms levelled against Mr. Lloyd George, and they were many and bitter, no one can ever say that he faltered or allowed his will to waver in the determination to achieve victory. From the moment he succeeded Mr. Asquith as Premier his whole energies were concentrated on the task of bringing Britain triumphant through the war.
It was a long voyage, and often a dark one, but from time to time it was illumined by the brightness of the Premier's faith, and the clarion call to duty, to 'strengthen the sinews, summon up the blood,' rang out again and again. Germany rightly regarded him as its chief enemy, for his tireless energy, boundless faith, and great personal magnetism held the nation together through social, industrial, and military crises. Finally, after a long voyage, this pilot brought the ship of state safely into harbour. In the words applied to Lincoln we might say, 'Now he belongs to the ages.'"
