Title
New Wisteria Leaves, Chapter 33 (Fuji no Uraba) from the series "A Modern Collection of Genji in Colour Prints" ("Ima Genji nishiki-e awase")
Description
In this print, a young woman seated on a balcony, gazes down at Mitsuuji (Genji) who is stood beneath a tree covered with flowering wisteria. The woman is fashionably dressed in a red patterned kimono and wears her hair in an elaborate and decorative style. Mitsuuji is shown elegantly dressed in a purple floral patterned kimono and checkerboard patterned trousers (hakama). His clothing is layered and the fabric appears quite stiff. The hilts of his two samurai swords are visible at his waist and in one hand he holds a red folding fan. Mitsuuji's hair has been bound with a purple cord in a lobster tail topknot. This image probably depicts a scene of courtship.
This image derives from the serial novel or 'gokan', 'A Fake Murasaki and a Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji) written by Ryutei Tanehiko and illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), that was published between 1829-1842. This story reworks elements from the 'Tale of Genji' and transposes the action from the Heian period (794-1185) to the time of the Muromachi era's Onin Wars (1467-1477).

Kyoka poem
Murasaki Shikibu 'Tale of Genji', 'Fuji no Uraba', Chapter 33. In this chapter To no Chujo decides to speak to Genji on the subject of a possible union between his daughter, Kumoi no Kari, and Genji's son, Yugiri. This is a difficult subject to raise, as To no Chujo had previously objected to this union. To no Chujo invites Yugiri to his home to view the wisteria. After music and wine Yugiri is invited to spend the night and he is reunited with Kumoi no Kari. Genji is pleased with this marriage.
Yugiri exchanges poems with the Fujiwara Dame of Staff.
Murasaki is involved in Akashi no Himegami's donning of the train ceremony. As Murasaki is not the girl's mother, the Lady of Akashi is invited to accompany her daughter's ceremonial arrival and to be present during the donning of the train.
Yugiri and Kumoi no Kari move to Sanjo, Yugiri's late grandmother's estate, and the building and its gardens are put in order.
Genji is promoted to a status equivalent to that of an honorary retired Emperor. Retired Emperor Suzaku and Emperor Reizei visit Genji's Rokujo estate to view the autumn leaves.
