June Day celebrates George Heriot, the founder of the school, which opened in 1659. Originally all the pupils stood in the stone quadrangle of the school, below the statue of George Heriot. Flowers were placed on the statue and the school song was sung. The ceremony ends with all the pupils filing out one at a time, the youngest first, leaving the sixth years (who will be leaving the school) to leave the grounds last. There are now too many pupils to stand in the quad so the ceremony is held on the grass at the side of the school.
