The name Ardrossan literally means 'height of the little promontory'. The town developed during the 18th and 19th centuries due to its coastal position, and shipbuilding was an important industry. It was also a popular tourist destination and once had five railway stations. Today Ardrossan is developing as a commuter town, and is part of a regeneration area.
