St Margaret's Convent and school was built in 1834. It was the first Catholic Convent in Scotland to open since the Reformation and was under the ministry of the Ursulines of Jesus. It is on the east side of Whitehouse Loan and includes the remaining sections of the mansion house of Whitehouse which was built in 1505. In 1986, the building was renamed Gillis College and became home to the senior seminary for the Archidiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh. In 1995 it became Gillis Centre, which houses various diocesan organisations, a theological library and conference facilities.
