This is an photograph of the 'Northern range' of the City Chambers, which stands 12 storeys high, over Cockburn street, while only three storeys over the Royal mile on the opposite side. This demonstrates the steepness of the slope upon which the chambers were built. The 'Northern range' houses the council chambers.
