Robert Louis Stevenson stands next to Fanny Stevenson, Lloyd Osbourne, Mr. Rick, an agent for Wightman Brothers traders on Butaritari and a member of the crew of the Equator. Four of them are sitting on the roof of the cabin whilst one crew member is standing on the edge of the boat holding on to a large pulley. Two masts can be seen behind them. They all have hats and most have floral garlandss around their necks. The photo has the written inscription "The schooner 'Equator'- 68 tons- Capt. Denis Reid - casting off Oceanic Co's Wharf at Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, on course for Butaritari, Kingsmill Islands, with Stevenson party on board, June 30 1889".

The image is from the photograph album entitled 'The Cruise of the Equator' of Robert Louis Stevenson's travels around the Gilbert Islands and Samoa in 1889.
