Loch Keterine [Loch Katrine]
Description
A man directs a horse who appears to be pulling a long, circular tube of unknown material along a long road which crosses over a river. Item is dated 14 Sep 1800. Loch Katrine became an essential part of daily life in Glasgow in 1855 when it became the key source of water for the ever-growing city population. A number of aqueducts were built to carry the water, with one being inaugurated by Queen Victoria in 1859. A number of mills were also set up around the Loch during the late 1800s. Prior to the industrial uses of the loch, farming was the main form of subsistence. The objects being pulled by the horse in this image may have had a farming use or perhaps used in some of the early mills.
