The Scott Monument was built as a memorial to the writer Sir Walter Scott. Construction took place between 1840-1846 on the George Kemp design. Two hundred and eighty seven steps take you to the top, offering views along Edinburgh's Princes Street.
Also in this photograph is the roof of Waverley Market, designed by Robert Morham, was built in 1872 to house Edinburgh's fruit and vegetable market. However, due to other uses of the Waverley Market the sale of fruit and vegetables returned to Market Street. This indoor market was lit by huge skylights among the formal gardens on the roof. It was demolished in 1974 and replaced by Waverley shopping centre, later called Princes Mall.
