Hew Morrison was Edinburgh's first Principal Librarian serving from 1887-1922. He was appointed in 1887 on an annual salary of £300 per annum. Hew Morrison, a teacher by profession, was a native of Sutherland. In his thirty-four years as City Librarian he was responsible for developing the Central and five Branch Libraries and, in association with Andrew Carnegie, played an active part in the development of the public library service throughout Scotland.
