Work on the Gas Works started in 1898 and finished 1902, further work was carried out between 1903 to 1910.
The design for the gas works allowed for considerable future expansion and was never fully built the main surviving features of the gas works are walls at the main entrance, gasholder No 1, and the railway station building and platform. There has been new buildings built on part of the site which includes Scottish Gas Offices, Edinburgh's Telford College and housing.
