Description
22nd March Lerwick Harbour!

"Scotland for ever!" - so near & yet so far! We've got so far, but can't get no further!! We're "interned" here. After a few days' wait in Bergen, we got abroad [aboard] a cargo boat & set sail on the morning of the 17th: - bound for Liverpool, which where we were told we would be in 48 hrs at the most! 48 days methinks! We are aboard an armoured cargo boat "The Smolenski" - a Wilson Liner - a very comfie little tub. Our skipper, Capt: Young - is one of the best, so we are in good hands. Unfortunately, for us, our cargo is of value - 600 tons of zinc-spelter for munitions - so the Boches know our movements! We dashed arcross [across] here under cover of darkness, made a record run & were outside the Bay by Sunday afternoon (18th). Fortunately for us we had a thick fog all the way across. We were signalled to outside the harbour to put in here, so in we came & here we are still! We're not allowed ashore, so as you can imagine, our wrath is great & we're really becoming dangerous!
We hear rumours of a Revolution in Petrograd & that the Tsar & Tsarina have been deposed - we're longing to hear more. It had to come. Strikes me we just got away in time.
