Description
they say, who abolished "vodka". And the prohibition of vodka has had an astonishing effect upon the public life of the people, both in the great cities & in the country. It is a rye-spirit, quite colourless & - I believe - very unpleasant to taste! It is not meant to be mixed with water, but is swallowed "neat". Before the war the people drank a great deal of it, with the result that they lived in a sort of dazed condition & their brains were always "muddled". Now they are beginning to "see clearly".
The Russians are tremendous smokers. The women, no less than the men are "hardened sinners" in this respect, even to the extent of
indulging their hobby in between the various courses of a meal. But the "fragrant weed" is of the mildest description & the cigarettes
so incessantly consumed are two thirds, cardboard mouth piece.
One gets very easily tired of the characterlessness of flavour of the Russian "papir?si".
The other night we went out to "The Tee Hills" - high artificial runs for toboganning [tobogganing]. These Tee Hills are out at the Imper- ial Retschnoy Yacht Club, such a beautiful place on the Gulf of Finland, where in winter the people skate, toboggan & ice yacht.
The latter presents a picturesque scene when the white canvas "birds" cruise to & fro across the frozen sea of the Finnish Gulf.
