Description
The poor, weak Tsar seems to have no say in the matter - but they have one very strong man - the Grand Duke Nicholas & fortunately he is in command at the front. He's v. popular & a fine character.
There has been a terrible row in the Duma on the head of this "Peace Talk" - The Prime Minister Stürmer [Sturmer] has been deposed & the Duma suspended. Our ambassador in Petrograd - Sir George Buchannan [Buchanan] - made a very strong & impressive speech, in which he told the Duma, that they had proofs of the secret meeting which was held with the German war minister, arranging for a seperate [separate] peace between Russia & Germany. Altogether it looks as if there would be internal trouble in Russia ere long. One hears rumours of a revolution in Petrograd.
The army & the people are all against a seperate [separate] peace & all against the Tsarina & her party - Rasputin is evidently the worst offender & is said to have an extraordinary "power" over the Tsarina. There'll be some "fun" in Russia soon!
Well - enough of politics - or this letter will never get through. We entrained about 7 p.m. what a night, bucketing rain. Our troop-train over-flowed; with difficulty, accomodation [accommodation]
was secured for us; our "'appy 'ome" was a small wooden, horse-box affair, with seats sharp & narrow, boarded up windows,
