Description
A woman and her children sit in a doorway beside a butcher's shop. Above them a sign displays rates for nightly and weekly lodgings.The youngest child sits on the oldest girl's lap. Both small children wear aprons and all three children are barefoot. The butcher's window advertises and displays cuts of meat and in the doorway to the left hang animal carcasses.

This is a photograph from 'The Life History of a Slum Child' focusing on the community living in the Canongate. The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace. Accompanying text reads, "And her point of observation of life - what is it? Look at the little bare-footed drudge, still a child herself, but kept from child-like life by the necessities of 'looking after' her younger sister - life as seen from the alley door, under the direction of the alley friend!"
