This is a photograph from 'The Life History of a Slum Child' focusing on the community living in the Canongate. The Canongate is the section of Edinburgh's Royal Mile running from the junction with Jeffrey Street to a roundabout almost immediately outside Holyrood Palace. Accompanying text reads, "This was the home of the father (who was in prison when the child was born) and the mother who was just 16 years of age."
