This was site 3 of 5 proposed sites for the new City Hall, in the official report, by the Town Clerk, Thomas Hunter, and the City Architect, Robert Morham, 'on the proposed sites for the New City Hall to be erected under Mr. Usher's Gift'. Note, the actual Lothian Road site is not included in this report on 'Five Suggested Sites', dated 30th September 1898.
This site stands on the north side of George Street at the junction with North Castle Street. The area covers 4489 square yards, enough space for a hall with two galleries seating 3500 to 4000 people. There is also a space at the back of the building which would create an open space for carriages in waiting.
