For First World War campaigns waged on desert battlefields, horses and other draft animals were ill-equipped at pulling artillery across front lines. Camels were drafted into service as a solution, helping to transport goods and troops across vast and harsh desert landscapes. Britain, New Zealand, and Australia all supported Camel Corps during the war, with their troops forming the four battalions of the Imperial Camel Corps. The men of the camel corps had a reputation as brave and tough fighters, adept at taking on an environment of similar character.
