Early aviators used the relatively flat area near Moorpark in Renfrew from around 1910 to practice their take-off and landing tecnique. In 1914, it was established as a military airfield and occupied by the Royal Flying Corps. In 1933 Renfrew was operating its first civilian air services to Campbeltown and to London.
Renfrew Airport suffered from crosswinds, fog and space restrictions. As air travel grew, it was decreed no longer fit for purpose. A new airport was created at nearby Abbotsinch, a former Royal Naval Air Station. In 1966 this opened as Glasgow Airport.
