Morningside was once a village on a main road south from Edinburgh. In the 1850s it was no more than a row of thatched houses and a blacksmith's forge and beyond the Jordan Burn was open countryside. Nowadays it is predominantly residential with a collection of small traditional shops, restaurants, supermarkets, a library and hospitals.
"Morningside Library, opened in 1904, stands on the site of Denholm's Smiddy, which was the heart of the 19th century Morningside village".
