The accompanying descriptive text in the volume begins as follows:
'This mansion, the residence of Robert George Balfour Wardlaw Ramsay, Esq., is situated near the northern boundary of the parish of Carrington, Edinburghshire, and is in the vicinity of Hawthornden and Rosslyn. It stands on the banks of one of the tributaries of the South Esk, and is approached by a bridge, from which a fine view of the house is obtained. It was built by Mr David Wallace, from the plans and under the care of Messrs Burn and Bryce, architects, and was finished in the year 1844. The house is of large dimensions, and the style of architecture is that of the reign of James VI. Its exterior is enriched with a variety of shields and other ornamental work. It is built of beautiful stone, from a quarry on the estate, the same as that used for Rosslyn Chapel, and is at once a monument of the refined taste and abilities of the accomplished architects.'
The full text may be viewed from the volume which is held at the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection in Edinburgh Central Library.
Whitehill has been converted into residential flats.
