Title
'People enjoying the cool air at Ryogoku Bridge, Edo' ('Edo Ryogoku suzumi no zu').
Description
The print depicts numerous courtesans enjoying the cool evening air onboard pleasure boats on the Sumida River. In the background crowds watch firework displays from Ryogoku Bridge. Fireworks were the highlight of several summer festivals such as the Tanabata Festival and Obon, both festivals took place during the seventh lunar month.
The Ryogoku Bridge over the Sumida River was the perfect viewing point to enjoy the annual summer fireworks display. The restaurants on either side of the river sponsored these displays, and wealthy merchants hired pleasure boats for private firework viewing (hanabi) parties. The city of Edo, because of its closely built wooden houses, was very susceptible to the outbreak of fire, and for this reason fireworks were restricted to the Sumida River area.
