'Fashions for Enjoying the Four Seasons' ('Furyu shiki asobu')
Description
This is a full-length print of two courtesans. The women wear their belt sashes (obi) tied at the front instead of the back, making it easier for them to dress themselves. The woman standing is holding a paper fan (uchiwa) behind her, and the kneeling courtesan is carrying a pillow (makura). Both women wear their hair in the customary elaborate hairstyles with rod shaped hairpins (kogai). Hairstyles changed to reflect a courtesan's level of apprenticeship and training; ornaments changed monthly, depending on the season and the annual festivals.
