Description
A pillar print (hashira-e) depicting two courtesans from the 'Matsuba-ya' or 'House of the Pine Needle', a licensed brothel in the Edo pleasure district of Yoshiwara. The elaborate hairstyles with 'kogai' or rod shaped hairpins depict their level of training. One courtesan wears a kimono with a green plover design, depicting steadfastness in love.
