Kabuki scene with supernatural theme
Description
This is a pantomime scene from Kabuki that would have taken place in the dark. The female character, Naratome no mae, grasps one end of a banner not seeing that the male character, Tada no Kurando Yukitsuna, is pulling the other end. The banner is decorated with the symbol of the sun and moon (jitsu getsu). Behind Naratome no mae a mysterious fire blazes in the sky; this is usually a sign that a ghost is present or that fox magic is at work.
This print is almost identical to another print by Kunisada in which the background is filled with a large cobweb and spider.
