Description
Nurses from the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (F.A.N.Y.) line up for inspection during the Second World War. The women wear dresses, white sashes and white caps. Leading the group of inspectors is Winston Churchill, Prime Minister. He is accompanied by the Lord Provost, Sir William Young Darling, wearing military uniform and a medal around his neck and the Chief Constable who wears police uniform. Churchill wears a top hat and a double-breasted coat.

During World War II many men and women were recruited to groups to form Britain's civil defence. These people included air raid wardens, nurses and fire fighters. The aim was to ensure that Britain would be prepared in the event of an enemy attack.
