The illustration of the Tulips readily demonstrates the ongoing focus on colour and form. In this personification the flower evokes flames, due to its red and yellow colouring as well as its cup-like shape.

This particular image also reveals the importance Crane attached to the posing of the figures, so that their bodies mirrored the curving lines of the flowers they humanised.
